ACTIVE RELEASE TECHNIQUES® (ART)
ART allows a practitioner to diagnose
and treat injuries to muscles,
tendons, fascia and nerves.
Active Release Techniques is a
non-invasive treatment for soft tissue
that uses manual tension and movement to separate adhesions and cumulative scar tissue that limit range of motion and circulation, create pain, and entrap nerves. These injuries can be resolved quickly and permanently with ART.
Trauma to the muscles, tendons, bones, blood vessels, fascia and/or nerves can result from (1) acute injury (recent motor vehicle accident, fall or sports injury), (2) repetitive injury (constant insult to the tissue), or (3) constant pressure and tension (poor posture). All of the foregoing injuries can lead to inflammation, a decrease in circulation and the development of scar tissue. The scar tissue reduces muscle/tendon strength, increases pain, decreases joint mobility and range of motion, and can entrap nerves in conditions such as carpal tunnel syndrome and sciatica. Other syndromes may include headaches, back pain, neck pain, shoulder pain, knee pain, plantar fascitis (arch pain), tennis and/or golfer’s elbow, Achilles tendonitis, rotator cuff/impingement and iliotibial band syndrome.
Every ART session is a combination of examination and treatment. The Active Release Techniques practitioner uses his or her hands to evaluate the tightness, texture and mobility of the tissues. Abnormal tissues are treated by combining precise tension by the practitioner with specific patient movements. This unique treatment releases the restrictive soft tissue, thereby reducing and/or eliminating pain, inflammation and nerve interference. The end result is an increase in range of motion, circulation, joint function, strength and stability, and sports performance.
